People we spoke with and their relatives told us that staff had the skills and approach needed to ensure people were receiving the right care. Quality assurance audits were completed by the registered manager, senior nurse and operations manager which included, medication and health and safety. Choosing care has been ranked one of life’s most stressful events.
James Page House is owned and run by Parkhaven Trust, a local organisation who have several care homes in the Maghull area of Liverpool. The home is on a large site on Deyes Lane in Maghull and is shared with another registered home belonging to the organisation. The grounds are large and there is plenty of room for people to sit out or go for a walk. The building is single story and has been adapted to a high standard.

Ratings from the last inspection were displayed within the home and on the provider’s website as required. People told us their privacy was respected and staff were careful to ensure people’s dignity was maintained. We asked people how their care was managed to meet their personal preferences and needs. People were satisfied with living in the home and felt the care of offered met their care needs. People we spoke with said they were consulted about their care and we saw some examples in care planning documentation which showed evidence of people’s input.
Following our last inspection in January 2014 we had made some compliance actions that the service needed to respond to and address. We found that these had been addressed and the improvements made. For example, the complaints procedure had been reviewed. People knew how to make a complaint if they were unhappy. People could therefore be assured that complaints were investigated and action taken as necessary. People were treated with respect and dignity by the staff.

The inspection took place on the 27 & 28 November 2018 and was unannounced.James Page provides residential and nursing care for 36 people in single en-suite rooms. The home had policies and procedures in relation to the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. We were told about one application that had been made.

We saw people’s dietary needs were managed with reference to individual preferences and choice. There was a complaints policy in place, which was displayed in the home. People living in the home told us they did not have anything to complain about.

At James Page House all bedrooms have en-suite shower and toilet; the bathrooms and shower facilities are equipped with specialist equipment. Our residents have a choice of comfortable lounges, dining rooms and an attractive courtyard area.
The staff are always on hand to talk to me and know how mum is when I ring. I really cannot thank them enough for the care and love they show mum but also to me. At James Page House we provide nursing care for older people with kindness and sensitivity.
What Type Of Care Is Required?
The staff at James Page have enabled my sister and me to go from being Dad’s carers to being his daughters again. Over the past few months with the ongoing challenges of Covid it’s been really reassuring that the staff have consistently ran a ‘tight ship’ protecting residents. Keeping my sister and me informed of any changes and giving us reassurance and confidence in my Dads care. Sarah is passionate about ensuring dignity and respect is met at all times including during end of life care.
People commented, 'I don't have to wait long for staff to attend to me. They come straight away when I call.' Another person told us, 'The staff are excellent. They are careful to explain everything they do.' People said staff did everything needed to support them with their day to day living. James Page House is a nursing home caring for 36 older people who have a complex range of needs. The nursing and care staff within the home are supported by their colleagues in primary care, the community matron and members of the wider multi-disciplinary team.
We found these were developed to ensure effective monitoring and development of the service as well as helping to ensure standards were continually maintained. James Page House provides the highest possible quality of personal and nursing care in a supportive and safe environment. All our clients are valued as individuals, whose privacy and dignity are respected at all times. The registered manager and provider met their legal requirements with the Care Quality Commission .
We undertook this focused inspection to check that they had they now met legal requirements. This report only covers our findings in relation to the specific area / breach of regulation. This report only covers two of the questions we normally asked of services; ‘Is the service safe? The other three questions; whether the service is ‘effective’, ‘caring’, and ‘responsive’ were not looked at on this inspection. Staff had been appropriately recruited to ensure they were suitable to work with vulnerable adults.
This helped to ensure that people received a good quality service at all times. We saw that people were supported to complete a range of daily activities and these included social activities. This was particularly evident with changing medical and nursing care needs.

Sarah worked as a student nurse at James Page in 2012 and from here she decided that being a Nurse in a nursing home environment would be the future of her career. Sarah started working in nursing homes from the age of 16 and gained her skills as a HCA.
